For more than two centuries, the monumental architecture of ancient Egypt has appeared in surprising places around the world — including the streets and skyline of New York City. How did the symbols of an ancient Nile civilization travel across the Atlantic to become powerful expressions of permanence, authority, and ambition in American culture? From towering obelisks and solemn memorials to long-lost landmarks that once stood where familiar institutions now rise, it's time to trace the enduring waves of “Egyptomania” that shaped the architectural landscape of New York and beyond.
Join New York Adventure Club for a two-part series exploring how waves of fascination with ancient Egypt reshaped architecture, monuments, and civic spaces in New York City and beyond. In Part Two: 1865–Present, we'll explore the later waves of “Egyptomania,” from the global revival sparked in the late 19th century to the renewed fascination with Egyptian imagery in the modern era.
Led by licensed NYC tour guide James Henry, this virtual exploration will include:
- The Suez Canal and Egyptomania’s second wave — How the canal’s 1869 inauguration and the debut of Verdi’s Aida reignited global fascination with ancient Egypt and its monumental imagery
- Egyptian monuments arrive in Western capitals — The dramatic journeys that brought ancient obelisks from Egypt to London and New York City, transforming them into modern civic monuments
- America’s great obelisk rises in Washington — The long-delayed completion of the Washington Monument and its role as the nation’s most ambitious reinterpretation of an ancient Egyptian form
- The discovery of King Tut’s tomb — How the sensational find in 1922 ignited a third wave of “Egyptomania,” inspiring Art Deco architecture, movie palaces, Masonic lodges, and popular culture
- Egyptian Revival in the modern world — From Jazz Age theaters to the blockbuster King Tut exhibitions of the 1970s and beyond, tracing how the imagery of ancient Egypt continues to resurface in art, architecture, and design
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with James — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
