A face in a painting may seem like a simple record — but what if it reveals far more than appearance alone? Across centuries, artists have returned to their own image, using self-portraits to explore identity, status, emotion, and meaning in deeply personal and revealing ways. It’s time to dive into the fascinating world of self-portraiture and uncover how six iconic artists, spanning time periods and countries, used themselves as both subject and storyteller.
Join New York Adventure Club for a six-part series exploring how legendary artists across time have used their own likeness to shape identity, meaning, and legacy. In Part One: Artemisia Gentileschi, we’ll examine how this groundbreaking Baroque painter used her own image to navigate a male-dominated art world and assert both artistic and personal agency.
Led by art historian, museum educator, and NYC lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, this art-centric virtual journey will feature:
- A selection of paintings by Artemisia Gentileschi and her contemporaries — examining key works that highlight her artistic voice
- An overview of her life and the challenges she faced — from navigating a male-dominated field to the evolving interpretation of her legacy
- Insights into what set her work apart — including her portrayal of powerful female figures
- A discussion around her use of her own likeness — and how her self-representation has been interpreted over time
- Context for each work — including the Baroque period, cultural landscape, and compelling details that bring her story to life
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Mariska — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
Can't make it live? Don't worry, you'll have access to the full replay for one week after the entire series concludes.
