On a small stretch of East 69th Street between First and Second Avenues lies one of the Upper East Side’s most historic blocks, with roots tracing back to the late 17th century. From waves of Eastern European immigration to evolving architectural styles, it offers a vivid snapshot of New York City’s past shaped by centuries of change. Get ready to hit the streets and take a deeper dive into this remarkable enclave with one of its longtime residents.

Join New York Adventure Club for a guided stroll along a picturesque stretch of East 69th Street between First and Second Avenues, an Upper East Side enclave that encapsulates centuries of New York City history — from its colonial-era origins to its transformation through waves of immigration and architectural change.

Led by native New Yorker Jacquelyn Ottman — 44-year resident of East 69th Street and former president of the East 69th Street Association — our unique experience will include:

  • An overview of the street’s early history, with roots dating back to 1677 and its evolution into a residential enclave
  • A look at Eastern European immigration and how these communities shaped the neighborhood’s identity in the late 19th century
  • A walk past preserved rowhouses dating to the 1870s, now part of a designated Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places
  • An exploration of historic tenement design, including a classic “dumbbell” pre-law building once typical of immigrant housing
  • A visit inside the landmarked Hungarian Reformed Church, a rare ecclesiastical work by architect Emory Roth, completed in 1915

See you there!

About Jacquie
Jacquelyn Ottman is a native New Yorker and fifth generation member of a family of German immigrant butchers who set up shop in NYC’s historic Fulton Market in 1849. She has chronicled her own family’s immigrant experience in Ottman & Company: Meatpacking District Pioneers (KDP 2022), now on the shelves of the New York Public Library, the Municipal Art Society and the Museum of the City of New York.
Today, she provides highly engaging walking tours to NYC history lovers about the unique histories of the Upper East Side where she grew up and continues to live, as well as the now famous Meatpacking District. An art history major at Smith College, Ottman engages walkers on the architectural and social histories of the landmarked rowhouses, landmarked Hungarian Reformed Church and pre-law tenements that still line the block she has lived on for 44 years. And all the while, she connects these historical narratives with her own memoirs as a resident, past president of the East 69 th Street Association and engaged public citizen.
