A massive shark, a seaside town in crisis, and a film that would forever change the way we experience movies. When Jaws hit theaters in 1975, it didn’t just terrify audiences — it created the blueprint for the modern blockbuster and sparked a cultural phenomenon unlike anything before it. But what chaos, innovation, and near-disaster unfolded behind the scenes to bring this legendary thriller to life? It’s time to dive beneath the surface of Hollywood’s most infamous production like never before.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the making of Jaws, uncovering how a troubled, over-budget production plagued by technical failures and on-set tensions ultimately became one of the most influential and highest-grossing films of all time — forever changing Hollywood and the moviegoing experience.

Led by historian Louis L. Picone, our unique behind-the-scenes cinematic experience will include:

  • The origins of Jaws, from Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel to its journey to the big screen
  • A look at the film’s young director, Steven Spielberg, and the cast dynamics that shaped the production
  • An overview of filming on Martha’s Vineyard, including how the production impacted and involved the local community
  • The unprecedented challenges of open-water filming, and the mechanical shark “Bruce” that famously malfunctioned
  • The historic 1975 release, complete with long lines, media buzz, and the birth of the summer blockbuster
  • The enduring legacy of Jaws, from its influence on filmmaking to its place in popular culture decades later

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Louis — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
