"Europe has a great deal of art, and America has a great deal of money” -Joseph Duveen
While the American Gilded Age is often epitomized by its mansions and entertainments, it's also defined by the incredible private art collections amassed by some of America's wealthiest individuals — thanks almost entirely to the genius of art dealer Joseph Duveen. How did this debonair Englishman entice the likes of Frick, Mellon, Rockefeller, Huntington, and J.P. Morgan to spend their hard earned millions on art, and by doing so earning his reputation as "the greatest art dealer"? It's time to uncover the tricks, ruses, and mischief employed by the master salesman who landed more than his fair share of Europe’s finest masterpieces to be conveyed into American hands.

Join New York Adventure Club for a roller-coaster ride through the Gilded Age as we retell the astonishing, and always amusing, stories behind Joseph Duveen (1869-1939), 1st Lord Duveen, a legendary art dealer from England who all but singlehandedly put together some of America’s most famous collections.

Led by Mark Meredith — founder of HouseHistree.com — our virtual showcase of a whole new side to art history that you won’t hear about in the museums will include:

  • An overview of Joseph Duveen and how he became an art dealer
  • A discussion of the masterpieces and Gilded Age characters involved with Duveen
  • An intimate look into the surprising and rarely told stories of America's priceless masterpieces, from how they came to these shores and ended up in our museums
  • A deep dive into the pioneering tricks and sales skills deployed by “the greatest art dealer of all time”
  • Rare and carefully selected photos of the stunning masterpieces by the Old Masters, and the principal protagonists who fought to have them hanging on their walls

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Mark — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!

About Mark
Mark grew up and was educated in the UK at Stowe School – where it would be hard not to gain a respect for eye-opening architecture – before working for twenty years in the building industry. However, his real passion has always been history, and particularly US history and the stories, legends, and people behind houses. He is an accredited lecturer in both the United States and Europe and the founder of [HouseHistree.com](https://www.househistree.com).
