Ever since Storm King Art Center opened to the public in 1960 in New Windsor, NY, it has grown to become one of the most important sculpture gardens in the world. How did it go from a rural private estate in a small Hudson River Valley town to an open-air museum with the largest collection of contemporary outdoor sculptures in the United States? It's time to uncover the legacy of one of the country's most unique art destinations.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the artistic legacy of Storm King Arts Center located in New Windsor, NY. This 500-acre open-air museum in the Hudson River Valley is widely considered one of world's leading sculpture gardens, featuring site specific sculptures of monumental size carefully placed within nature to correspond with the land and open space.
Led by museum educator and art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo, our virtual experience surrounding this sculpture garden will include:
- The origin story of how Storm King Art Center came to be
- How the initial acquisition of 13 works by Abstract Expressionist David Smith and monumental works by Di Suvero put Storm King on the art world map
- An overview of Storm King's layout and the significance behind each section of the grounds
- A discussion of how the works correspond with the landscape, including those that introduce contrasting industrial material, work with organic shapes or materials, or tell stories within the natural setting
- A comparison of the artists’ work here with those placed within an urban setting like New York City
- A closer look at major site specific commissions by Isamu Noguchi, Henri Moore, Louise Nevelson, Richard Serra, Maya Lin, Sarah Sze, Andy Goldsworthy, and others
- An introduction to current temporary exhibitions by established and emerging artists
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions about Storm King Art Center are welcomed and encouraged!
