This is a re-aired recording of the most recent live webinar in this series. Once the viewing period ends, this recording will not be offered again for at least one year.
More than a common language and history, England and the United States have shared art traditions for centuries. While many historical American artists traveled to England to study, with the hopes of bringing polish and technical mastery back home, not all of them decided to return. And vice versa for British artists, the U.S. provided fresh territory where their credentials stood out. It's time to uncover three unconventional artists who not only capitalized on this aesthetic exchange and stretched the boundaries of what was acceptable in art, but also grabbed the attention of both the British and Americans by blurring international boundaries with their cosmopolitanism.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series where we'll explore the foundations of modern art from the 1850s to World War I through the lives and portfolios of three artists living and working in England and the United States. In Part Three, we'll focus on John Singer Sargent. Long a favorite American artist, Sargent actually lived in Europe, before scandal chased him to England. There, he rebuilt his reputation, and as his fame skyrocketed, the American art world also eagerly claimed him as their own.
Led by American Art Historian Rena Tobey, our artistic deep dive will include:
- A look at the life and career of this iconic American artist, always considered an outsider in Europe and England
- Dissecting images to understand what made Sargent’s work so fresh and in-demand, and how he challenged the propriety of what art could show and say
- The scandal of Madame X and the life and career choices Sargent made in response
- An understanding of how this popular artist was pivotal to the development of celebrity culture
- A focus on how Sargent used fashion to reveal character in carefully crafted ways, including close looks at works from the MFA, Boston exhibit
