In the decades after World War II, the East Village became a magnet for artists, outsiders, and provocateurs pushing the limits of culture and expression. How did this neighborhood evolve into a global center for avant-garde art and underground culture? Get ready to hit the streets of the East Village to uncover the off-beat people, places, and stories behind one of New York City’s most radical eras.

Join New York Adventure Club as we wind through the East Village to trace its rise into one of the most influential and boundary-pushing cultural epicenters of the 20th century.

Led by historian Marc Catapano, this immersive journey will include:

  • A discussion of the East Village’s transformation in the decades following World War II
  • A visit to legendary cultural sites — walk past the former homes of iconic venues like the Peace Eye Bookstore, Electric Circus, and Fillmore East
  • A look at influential artistic figures — follow in the footsteps of Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, and Lou Reed
  • An overview of social and political upheaval — examine the forces that fueled the downtown avant-garde
  • An investigation into the “Groovy Murders” — uncover the chilling and little-known mystery that shocked the neighborhood

See you there!

*Please bring a water bottle and comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking!
