Hidden among Central Park’s rolling landscapes are stories of sacrifice, valor, and remembrance etched in stone and bronze. From grand monuments to nearly forgotten tributes, how did a green space once deemed unfit for memorials become a living tribute to generations of soldiers — and what do these memorials reveal about the city and nation as a whole? It’s time to uncover the powerful, often overlooked legacy of war woven through America’s most iconic park.

Join New York Adventure Club as we uncover the layered history of Central Park’s war memorials, and how a space once intended for leisure evolved into a powerful landscape of remembrance shaped by conflict, sacrifice, and national identity.

Led by author and New York City historian Stephen Wolf, our virtual exploration through Central Park’s memorials will include:

  • An exploration of Central Park’s earliest ties to war, including how its designers and laborers answered President Lincoln’s call during the Civil War
  • The story behind the park’s most iconic monuments, including the General Sherman statue and the evolution of Grand Army Plaza
  • A look at both prominent and overlooked memorials, from grand tributes to nearly hidden markers honoring those who served
  • Insights into the lives of New Yorkers in wartime, from celebrated figures to those largely forgotten by history
  • How the legacy of war is embedded in the park’s very landscape, revealing a deeper narrative of memory and meaning

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Stephen — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
