Before skyscrapers and craft cocktails, New York was a city of taverns, punch bowls, and political intrigue. What were early New Yorkers drinking, and how did these spaces in lower Manhattan influence everything from business to rebellion? Get ready to trace the city’s colonial drinking culture through Lower Manhattan, ending with cocktails (or mocktails!) inspired by the era.
Join New York Adventure Club as we hit the streets and explore the historic taverns, coffee houses, and breweries that shaped drinking culture in 18th-century New York.
Led by licensed New York tour guide James Hoffman, our unique three-hour tour & social hangout experience will include:
- An overview of Dutch and colonial drinking culture and how early taverns and breweries laid the foundation for New York’s social life
- A stroll through Lower Manhattan from Bowling Green to the South Street Seaport, tracing the footprint of colonial taverns, breweries, and gathering places
- A walk past Fraunces Tavern and the surrounding sites tied to George Washington and key moments of the Revolutionary era
- An exploration of the Tontine Coffee House and its role as an early hub of commerce and precursor to the New York Stock Exchange
- A deep dive into Hughson’s Tavern and the events surrounding the 1741 New York Conspiracy
- A visit to historic tavern sites including Lovelace Tavern, the Bank of Manhattan Building, and the Captain Joseph Rose House
Our experience will conclude at Quick Eternity cocktail bar, where guests will enjoy two full-sized cocktails (or mocktails) during the final hour! Inspired by 18th-century recipes and ingredients — such as rum punch, mulled cider, applejack, and madeira — each drink offers a flavorful connection to the drinking habits of early New Yorkers.
See you there!
