From tiny stone markers to full-scale sculptures, Washington is filled with historic memorials that often go unnoticed in the shadow of its most famous landmarks. What stories are hidden among these overlooked monuments scattered across our nation’s capital, and what do they reveal about the city’s past? It’s time to uncover Washington’s most unusual landmarks and the forgotten narratives behind them.
Join New York Adventure Club for a two-part series that explores Washington, DC’s most unusual — and often overlooked — monuments, memorials, and markers. In Part One: Downtown Oddities, we’ll venture beyond the Washington Monument to uncover a collection of curious relics and hidden memorials scattered in its shadow.
Led by Carolyn Muraskin, architectural historian and founder of DC Design Tours, this unique experience will include:
- Jefferson Pier — a modest stone marker that once represented Thomas Jefferson’s vision for the geographic center of the nation
- Japanese Pagoda — a 170-year-old stone pagoda gifted to the U.S., quietly symbolizing early international friendship
- First Air Mail Marker — a small, but powerful reminder of aviation pioneers who flew through dangerous conditions to deliver the mail
- Original FDR Memorial — a simple piece of stone that reflects how Franklin Roosevelt wished to be remembered—very differently from today’s expansive memorial
- Titanic Memorial — a dramatic statue honoring the men who perished aboard the Titanic
- Freedom Bell — a lesser-known bell that echoes themes of liberty while quietly challenging who freedom was historically meant for
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Carolyn — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
