They scheme, manipulate, murder, and betray — yet Shakespeare’s greatest villains remain some of his most captivating creations. What makes characters like Richard III, Iago, and Lady Macbeth so terrifyingly compelling centuries after they first appeared on stage? It’s time to step into the shadows of Shakespeare’s world and uncover the dark psychology behind the characters we love to hate.
Join New York Adventure Club as we delve into the minds of Shakespeare’s most notorious antagonists to uncover the ambition, manipulation, desire, and fatal flaws lurking beneath their poetic brilliance.
Led by award-winning playwright, lecturer, and historian David Peimer, our unique experience will include:
- Shakespeare’s most unforgettable villains, including Richard III, Iago, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, and Aaron the Moor
- The psychology of manipulation and how Shakespeare’s masterminds exploit the weaknesses, fears, and desires of those around them
- An examination of ambition and the desire for power, including the pivotal moments when calculated schemes begin to descend into obsession and madness
- The raw human psyche beneath Shakespeare’s poetic brilliance, and what these characters reveal about temptation, morality, and the darker sides of human nature
- A discussion around Shylock as villain or victim, and how one of Shakespeare’s most controversial characters complicates the traditional boundaries between antagonist and wronged outsider
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
