From psychedelic rock and counterculture to groundbreaking movies, television, art, and historic moments that captivated millions, the final years of the 1960s were nothing short of extraordinary. How did 1967 through 1969 bring the decade’s cultural revolution to a crescendo while laying the groundwork for the transformative 1970s ahead? It’s time to relive three unforgettable years when pop culture pushed boundaries, shattered conventions, and reflected a rapidly changing world.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series that takes a deep dive into the final years of the 1960s, when pop culture continued to evolve at a remarkable pace across music, film, television, art, and more. In Part One: 1967, we’ll explore the year pop culture went psychedelic, from the Summer of Love and a new generation of rock icons to boundary-pushing films, television, theater, and graphic art.
Led by pop culture historian Arlen Schumer, this multimedia showcase and celebration will include:
- The Beatles’ extraordinary year, from the landmark Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the worldwide satellite broadcast of “All You Need Is Love” to the controversial Magical Mystery Tour
- The Monterey International Pop Festival, which brought established acts like The Who together with breakout performances by Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, and Jimi Hendrix
- The Summer of Love and rise of San Francisco’s counterculture, including the first Human Be-In in Golden Gate Park and Haight-Ashbury’s emergence as an epicenter of the hippie movement
- The psychedelic revolution in art and design, from Peter Max’s cosmic graphics to Milton Glaser’s iconic Bob Dylan poster
- Groundbreaking works across film and theater, including Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, and the off-Broadway debut of Hair
- Television that challenged established conventions, including the irreverent comedy-variety format of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and Patrick McGoohan’s iconoclastic British series The Prisoner
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Arlen — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
