Ever since the very first films ever made, genres like science fiction, fantasy, and gothic horror have provided audiences with new visions, spectacles, and worlds to explore. What were the inspirations for these imaginative sets and how did they help create an immersive experience for anyone watching? From space travel in the Voyage to the Moon to castles in Dracula, it's time to explore how set designers reimagined real-world architecture to create fictional buildings and structures that became an essential part of their film's story.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series on how the fanciful and imagined architecture found in feature films has reflected — and sometimes influenced — the art of buildings in the real world. In Part Two: Fantasy, we’ll take a close look at the architecture found within fantasy films throughout the 21st century.
Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase featuring a selection of unique structures will include:
- A discussion of the architecture in classic fantasy films such as The Wizard of Oz and its Emerald City
- A look at the fanciful worlds of Jim Henson’s Dark Crystal and Labyrinth
- The epic worlds created by director Peter Jackson in the Lord of the Rings films, along with which film sets one can still take a tour of
- The academic fantasy of Hogwarts from the Harry Potter cycle, and which real-life medieval properties served as inspiration for the set designers
- An in-depth look at the designers behind the films and the real buildings and projects they drew their inspiration from
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions about these unique buildings are welcomed and encouraged!
