At the dawn of the 20th century, there was perhaps no city on Earth more dazzling than Paris. How did the French capital become a global showcase for groundbreaking art, architecture, technology, fashion, entertainment, and celebrity? From the triumph of Art Nouveau and electric illumination to legendary artists, performers, and personalities, it's time to rediscover Paris at the height of the Belle Époque.

Join New York Adventure Club as we journey back to Paris in 1900, when the Exposition Universelle welcomed millions from around the globe and the city's streets, galleries, and entertainment venues offered an extraordinary snapshot of French culture at the dawn of a new century.

Led by historian, writer, and broadcaster Patrick Bade, this unique experience will include:

  • A close look at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 and how the monumental world's fair transformed Paris into an international showcase for modern civilization, technological innovation, and French culture
  • An exploration of the city's changing face, from groundbreaking Art Nouveau architecture and electric illumination to grand hotels, railway stations, department stores, restaurants, and other landmarks of the Belle Époque
  • The artists reshaping the cultural landscape, from established masters like Claude Monet and Auguste Rodin to a rising generation that included Pablo Picasso and Gustav Klimt
  • An examination of the Art Nouveau movement, including the architects, designers, jewelers, and illustrators whose distinctive new aesthetic swept through Paris at the turn of the century
  • Personalities and performers who captivated Parisian society, from pioneering scientists and prominent public figures to legendary actors, dancers, composers, singers, and cabaret stars

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Patrick — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
