Being laid to rest in New York didn't always mean resting in peace. Why were freshly buried corpses once so valuable that medical students and professional grave robbers risked riots, arrest, and public fury to steal them from the ground? From ransomed remains to missing bones, it's time to uncover the macabre stories of New York's stolen dead — and the lengths people went to obtain them.
Join New York Adventure Club as we trace the dark history of body snatching in New York City, from those who plundered burial grounds in the 18th and 19th centuries to the illicit trade in human remains that has persisted into the modern era.
Led by licensed NYC tour guide James Henry, this virtual exploration will include:
- A look at the demand for human cadavers, including why certain New York burial grounds became especially vulnerable as medical education rapidly expanded
- An overview of "Snatching 101," from the methods used to remove a freshly buried corpse to the rise of hired professionals and organized gangs
- A discussion around graveyard resistance, from the extraordinary lengths families went to protect the recently deceased to the public fury that erupted into New York's Anatomy Riots
- A closer look at some of New York's strangest cases, including a ransomed corpse, two executed pirates, and the missing bones of a Founding Father
- An examination of the practice's surprising legacy, from its influence on literature to the controversial world of modern tissue brokers and illegal body-part sales
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with James — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
