Throughout European art history, the greatest leaps forward in painting have often begun with artists willing to break the rules. But what happens when painters reject convention, challenge the establishment, and completely rethink what art can be? From Giotto's startling realism to Caravaggio's dramatic canvases, it's time to uncover the rebels, revolutionaries, and rule-breakers who forever changed how we see the world.

Join New York Adventure Club for a five-part series that explores the bold artists and movements that defied convention, challenged authority, and transformed the course of European art. In Part Five: Surrealism, we'll examine how artists including Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Max Ernst turned to dreams, psychology, and the unconscious mind to liberate imagination from the constraints of logic and convention.

Led by art historian, museum educator, and NYC lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, this art-centric virtual journey will feature:

  • An overview of Surrealism's origins in the aftermath of World War I, including its roots in Dada and rejection of conventional artistic and social values
  • A look at the influence of Sigmund Freud's theories of the unconscious, and how dreams and psychology inspired Surrealist imagery and methods
  • An examination of Dalí's meticulously rendered dreamscapes, along with his fascination with the irrational and flair for public provocation
  • A discussion of Magritte and Ernst's distinctive approaches to Surrealism, from Magritte's subversion of logic, language, and everyday objects to Ernst's experiments with chance and unconventional techniques
  • A look at Surrealism's lasting cultural legacy, including its enduring influence on film, literature, advertising, popular culture, and the visual arts

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Mariska — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
