My great-grandfather Anton Winter pleaded guilty to counterfeiting in federal court. He was sentenced to seven years of hard labor at a penitentiary in Auburn, in upstate New York, and was fined five thousand dollars.
In working through the Winter case files, I often felt pinpricks of déjà vu: an exact turn of phrase, an absurdly specific expenditure.
