AMC Beginner Canoe Camping Weekend
Details
Interested in learning more about canoe camping? Want some hands on experience but haven't had a chance to check it out?
AMC NH Canoe Committee is hosting an on-water canoe camping weekend June 5 - 7, 2026 for beginning canoe campers. This weekend is designed as a follow up to the Canoe Camping Workshop given in January 2026.
The entire weekend will take place on Lake Umbagog. Lake Umbagog straddles the New Hampshire and Maine borders and is renowned for its fishing, birds and beautiful setting.
We will meet midmorning on June 5 in Errol, NH and paddle a few miles up the Androscoggin River to the lake. We will cross the lake to our first campsite, which is in the Umbagog Lake State Park. Before we start paddling we will load and trim our canoes, go over the route and make last minute lake crossing decisions based on the weather.
On the second day we will break camp and paddle to the next lovely campsite, which is at the mouth of the Rapid River, on the Maine side of the lake.
On both nights, supper will be prepared over a fire by the leaders. Leaders will provide support and directions for setting up camp, including the use of tarps.
On Sunday, we will break camp and make our way back to the put-in by early afternoon.
This trip is weather dependent. The trip will be canceled or relocated if the weather makes paddling or camping unsafe.
