Tides are an important factor when paddling estuaries or tidal rivers. Poor planning can result in paddling against a strong current or finding a mud flat when returning to your launch. Tides are more variable than one might think and this online presentation will discuss the variables and online tools used for planning.
We'll cover:
- What are tides?
- Are tidal flows the same in every harbor, bay, and tidal river?
- Finding flow information – scouting, research.
- Onshore wind – the danger of a 2pm return.
- How to read tidal charts
- The importance of navigation: landmarks, compass, GPS, and maps.
- The importance of scouting trips
- We'll specifically cover a number of popular coastal rivers: Parker/Mill Rivers, Essex River, Neponset River, Boston Harbor, and more.
