DC: Art All Night - Fire Performance at Dupont Circle
Saturday 14th from 7pm to 3am, eight neighborhoods in DC will be hosting various night time artistic events, including fire performances.
I have been struggling to get info on the various different neighborhoods, BUT… there is one for sure can’t miss performance in the Dupont Circle neighborhood…..
From 9:00 pm to 9:45 pm Pecurilarty Productions will be doing their awesome fire artistry on the North side of the Dupont Circle.
I would advise reserving a parking spot or taking public transportation, either way get there early to get a good spot for the performance, as this night gets super crowded.
But it’s worth it…

My tips on photographing fire spinners…
- Relax and have fun. It’s a fast paced, chaotic environment. Don’t expect to do fine portraiture work. Go with the flow (literally).
- DO NOT use flash during performance. It’s literally a safety issue.
- Settings will depend on if you want to photograph the performers or the fire. You won't be able to do both, but you can get lucky.
- For performers, you’ll want a fast shutter to freeze the action. The performers are really good at posing for cameras. Try to capture them as the fire lights up their faces.
- For fire, you’ll want to use a slower shutter with a darker exposure to capture the flow of fire without blowing out it’s details.
- When in doubt or if you are struggling… go full auto. You’ll be surprised at how good they turn out.
- Tripods are not really needed, a stead hand is good enough, even with a slight shutter drag.
- Don’t forget to just stop and enjoy the performance too.
- Did I mention have fun?! lol :)
My (horribly cropped thanks to Meetup) cover photo is of some of the performers you'll most likely see. They actually held this pose for a while to make it easier to get photos. I'll post some more photos in the event album to show what I mean to shoot either the performers or the fire.. and what it looks like when you get lucky and are able to capture both!
Of course.. due to crowds and chaos this is a no-host meet up.
Have fun! And as always… show me your favorite pictures! :D
