Showing Our Loyalty to the Legion
Details
Like many of my fellow Vancouverites, I enjoyed a hearty bout of laughter when it was announced that we'd be getting our own Voodoo Doughnut. To take such an iconic Portland staple so intimately attached to the city's tourism industry and plunk down a new location outside of Vancouver Mall was a serving of irony far more delicious than any cereal-topped confection.
Once the initial giddiness faded, however, what we were ultimately left with was a satellite location for a subpar pastry chain that hasn't been culturally relevant in at least a decade. Because the only voodoo happening at that place is whatever black magic they use to make the doughnuts taste stale thirty seconds after they leave the fryer.
In this guy's humble opinion, a far better score from our southern neighbors is Loyal Legion. The LL in East Portland has been among my favorite places to eat and drink for a good number of years now. The menu is varied with generous portions, the food quality has been amazingly consistent, and their tap list is so long that the Department of Justice couldn't redact it all.
Sad as I was to see Heathen Brewing Feral Public House close their doors, getting our very own Loyal Legion in its place is a trade I'm glad our city could make. Let's officially welcome this new addition to the neighborhood by showing them what Nightlife in the Couve is all about! (Hint: It's not going home while the sun is still up. If you have to leave early, please at least loudly announce that an Amazon delivery truck crashed into your house or something so our group doesn't look lame.)
