In the classic holiday special It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, Linus van Pelt famously declines going trick-or-treating and attending a Halloween party so that he can sit in a pumpkin patch and await the arrival of the titular Great Pumpkin. In the six decades since the special first aired in 1966, people (read: English majors suffering from sleep deprivation and deadline anxiety) have interpreted the story as an allegory for everything from religious fanaticism to Trotskyism to child neglect. And while that last theory may admittedly be onto something, I personally like to think it's a cautionary tale about the mental health risks of not having fun on Halloween.

Let us take that lesson to heart and not squander the precious gift that is All Hallows' Eve falling on a Saturday this year. If you go out one weekend in 2026, make it this one. Throw on a scary/snappy/sleazy costume and join your friends at Nightlife in the Couve as we crawl the streets of Vancouver reveling in every bit of barely-legal mischief we can uncover!

I realize starting at Shanahan's has become something of a cliché, but they've got the room needed for big groups. Our past Halloween events have done some pretty crazy numbers, so our route for the evening will partly depend on how many folks show up this year. We'll be hitting plenty of exciting spots no matter what—including a late-night patio dance party at Loyal Legion! As for the wheres and whens of the in-between stops, you'll just have to pay attention and listen when I announce them. Sorry.

As always, donations to help offset the costs of hosting these events are hugely appreciated. If the Halloween spirit has you feeling generous, I'm graciously accepting a recommended donation of $6 per participant via Venmo: @CouveNightlife (Any amount is fine, honestly. I just landed on six bucks because it's a spookier number than five.)
