Fancy a challenge for a good cause? Join us for a fund raising walk on the famous Zandvoort race track!

The brother and mother of one of my best friends have been diagnosed with PLN, a genetic heart condition. This disease still has no cure and crucial research is at risk of slowing down as international funding becomes uncertain due to the changed political climate. That's why we are trying to raise funds, so this very important research can continue.

Last year I joined this charity walk and asked for donations. This year I thought: our Nijmegen Explore & More community is full of people who enjoy walking, good conversations, and a bit of a challenge... so why not just invite you to join us? It would mean very much to me if you do!

What to expect
We walk (or run if you want) laps on the actual race track itself.
You decide how many laps you want to walk (1-10). Each lap is 4259 m, and a new lap starts every hour on the hour.

  • Start 09:00 → full challenge (10 laps / 42.59 km)
  • Start 14:00 → half distance (5 laps)
  • Start later → fewer laps

Even one lap is already meaningful. The distance you walk and if you make it or not, is not tied to the funds being raised.
We all start our final lap at 18:00, finishing together by 19:00.

My experience from last year is that, depending on your pace, you’ll usually have enough time for a decent break.

Schedule

  • 08:45 Opening ceremony
  • 09:00 First lap
  • 18:00 Final lap start
  • 19:00 Finish / ceremony
  • 20:00 Event ends

Costs

  • Registration costs €30 (€25 if you sign up before April 1st).
  • After registering, you’ll be invited to create your own fundraising page so your friends and family can support you. Doesn't have to be anything fancy (and yes, ChatGPT and I would be happy to help with your page if needed 🙂)

How to join our team

  1. Sign up here (The sign-up page is Dutch, I can help you if needed)
  2. After signing up, RSVP to this Meetup event

Trouble signing up? Contact me and we’ll walk (pun intended) through it together.

Getting there

  • Ride along from Nijmegen: I’ll be driving from Nijmegen and can take 3 people with me (free of charge).
  • Departure: 06:30 from Nijmegen CS Arrival: around 08:20 at the race track
  • Public transport: station Zandvoort aan Zee is a 5-10 min walk and there are busses, more info here
  • Car: Directions: Circuit Zandvoort, Burgemeester van Alphenstraat 108, 2041 JA Zandvoort. A parking space can be reserved on the sign-up page for €12.50 (limited spaces available)
  • Note: from the entrance it’s about a 5-10 minute walk to the start.
  • Once you’ve signed up for our team, I’ll send you an invitation link to our WhatsApp group, might come in handy for making arrangements to travel together.

What to bring?

  • Enough food, water and snacks for the day
  • Weather-appropriate clothing and sunscreen
  • Shoes that allow you to walk the distance on asphalt. Hiking shoes are not everyone's favorite on this kind of terrain, running shoes might be better. Or switch every couple of hours.

Training
Wanna challenge yourself and train for this event?

These training events are free of charge if you sign up for our team using the above instructions, before the training event starts.
Why is the longest training hike only 33 km? It has some elevation, so no worries. The race track is much easier to walk.
