What weâre about
Welcome to the Nix Meetup in Bern! We created this community space to bring together people interested in Nix and provide a platform for learning and knowledge exchange. Whether you're experienced with Nix or just getting started, we look forward to sharing experiences.
Nix is a lot of things. At its core, it is a build system that can be used to build Linux packages, Docker images, and many other things. Nix runs on all Linux distributions, macOS, and WSL2, offering access to over 100,000 Linux packages - more than any other package manager. These packages can be used to create reproducible developer environments, similar to Python virtualenvs, but extending to all system packages. Additionally, NixOS leverages this extensive package set to provide a fully declarative Linux distribution.
Nix is the foundation we have been waiting for and is transforming how we build, distribute, and run software. While it has existed for over 20 years, it's still evolving, with experimental features and ongoing development of user-friendly abstractions. Now is an excellent time to learn about Nix at our Meetup.
