Gyorgy Lukacs: When relationships among people become relations between things

After a long hiatus for grad school, Talk Philosophy is back!

We're kicking off our revival with Gyorgy Lukacs, the Hungarian social philosopher and literary theorist.

Credited with founding the Western Marxist tradition, which scrutinizes capitalism's impact on subjectivity and social relations, Lukacs is best known for elaborating Karl Marx's notion of reification: that under capitalist relations of production, relationships among people are reduced to relations between things.

We'll discuss his famous essay on the subject, Reification and the Consciousness of the Proletariat. It's only ten thousand words, but it's theoretically rich, so I've scheduled our talk a month out so everyone has plenty of time to close-read it.
