Presented by Mike Piston
Growing up in Rochester, NY, with a dad who worked for Kodak, Mike Piston started taking pictures at 10. He learned how to develop film and prints at the Kodak Camera Club and continued his photography hobby through college. He especially liked nature photography. Family and work life moved his hobby to the "back burner" until he retired in 2022. While hiking in Rockefeller State Park Preserve shortly after retirement, he came across a Pileated Woodpecker close enough to photograph with his iPhone. That sparked a renewed interest in photography, especially nature, landscape, and bird photography. After wandering hundreds of miles through Rockefeller State Park Preserve and other parks, Mike has a collection of over 1,000 bird, nature, and landscape photos that he displays on birdsofrockefeller.com and mikepistonphotography.com. In his presentation, Mike will give a brief review of his photo journey, then discuss how you can enjoy birdwatching on your hikes in Harriman, Norvin Green, and other state parks. • Birds that have recently been spotted in these parks • Species you can find in the parks while you hike in different seasons • Where to find birds along hiking trails • Tools you can use while hiking to help identify birds • Other resources you may find helpful '
Mike’s presentation promises to be both interactive and informative, offering practical tips and inspiration for our ADK North Jersey Ramapo members.
