Talk 1: Robert Kranenburg | Tech @ Wehkamp: A travelogue

At Wehkamp we have an unofficial motto: “Never a dull moment.” That is because of the nature of our business: in commerce it’s important to keep moving with trends and sudden demand. It is also because of our tech stack, which needs to keep up and deliver, so we keep changing it.

In his talk, Robert will take you through a journey of over 15 years of tech innovation: from a self hosted monolithic ASP website to microservices running in the cloud. You’ll hear which choices were made, why we made them and what our future plans are.

About Robert Kranenburg
Robert has been in software development for a long time. He joined Wehkamp in 2007 and worked on the website both as a software engineer and as an operations engineer. Nowadays, as a Pathfinder he works with our tech teams and leads to ensure our (multi-label) strategy is translated into the right technological architecture.

Talk 2: Jesse Bouwman | Image Classification at Scale

Just one glance at the website of wehkamp will show that we use a lot of images. Knowing that there are hundreds of thousands of products on the site you can imagine that we need a solid pipeline for handling those images. Because of trends, taste and other reasons one might want to change the images that customers see on the website.

In Jesse’s talk he will guide you through the steps wehkamp had to take to create a custom image pipeline that gave wehkamp the possibility to dynamically change the ordering of images on the website in a ‘fully’ automated way.

About Jesse Bouwman
Jesse Bouwman works as Data Scientist at Wehkamp and has been building image pipelines for eternity. Next to Data Science he’s now also responsible for managing the Databricks platform. Giving training, assisting in optimizations and helping getting the most out of the features.

Talk 3: Sander ten Brinke | Learning to ❤️ HATEOAS
Have you noticed that apps often contain code that already exists on the server? For example: Checking if an item can be deleted. But the server also checks this during deletion! If you change this logic on the server, you need to update all your apps, too! And that is just one of the downsides.. Isn't there a better way? During this presentation, you will learn how HATEOAS can help!
