In my last posting I explained how our ideas about the world we live in is based on our subjective experiences gained over our lifetime. Experiences that serve as landmarks spread along our life’s path and make up what can be refer to as our Maps of the Territory (MoT). Maps are representations of how over time our experiences play a key role in how we perceive the world.

It turns out humans are map makers. We may use road maps to show us how to get from one place to another. There are also traffic maps, weather maps and many other maps that all provide specific information about a given territory but none completely represents the territory. Our neurological maps are no different.

We use our maps as a guide to how to interact with the world we live in. As a police officer you may use one map that influences how you react in a specific situation; and, hopefully, in a similar situation you use another map as you interact with your family as a parent. So, you may use a different map under different context even thought the situation is much the same. As indicated above a map includes the identity we assume in the situation, the beliefs that support why we interact in a specific way, and the value that defines why it is important to take action.

And all of this is a product of learning from our subjective experiences. An experience that begins with a perception of an event gained from one or more of our five senses. From the sensory based information we proceed to develop a concept of the meaning of the event. NLP provides models to gain a better understanding of how a we build, at an unconscious level, concepts of our experiences.

It is not until we bring those things we do unconsciously to a level of conscious awareness to; first, understand it, then learn how to use it to bring about changes in our lives.

During a past face-to-face meet-up a frequent attendee explained to a new member how I offer something different about NLP that is not offered by others. Many seminars and work shops offer various NLP techniques to address a wide range of human conditions. NLP Techniques are used by practitioners to help resolve other people’s life challenges.

There is more about NLP than techniques. I can explain it better by sharing a past experience. I went to get an acupuncture treatment for a nerve problem in my shoulder. While the practitioner was sticking pins in and around my ankle I ask him if he could explain how sticking pins in my ankle had an effect on the nerve in my shoulder. He told me he had no idea. I did not return to that practitioner for further treatments.

NLP provides learning, processes, and techniques that can change a persons life in many ways. It is a very powerful technology. Would you want someone working with you who has practiced doing the techniques from a well written script; or, would you want someone who has gained a profound experience in personal growth learning from the discoveries of NLP that explains how and why each component of a technique is used?

Join me and other NLP junkies on Saturday, September 26 to explore our maps, experiences, the meaning we place on our experiences, and how this all drives our behaviors based on our belief/value systems, and how it all has a bearing on who we are.
