What we’re about

Writing can be lonely. Sometimes, we need to get out and away from our own distractions and excuses. Writing in cafes, parks, and libraries is all nice, but wouldn’t it also be good to belong to a group of writers? No Excuses, Just Write is just that- a Lisbon-based writing community that encourages writers to meet, write, speak about their craft, and share in the writing process. The goal of this platform is to focus on the process of writing, rather than on the destination- and hold each other accountable while we create.

Here's what happens:

  1. Every Tuesday from 18:30-20:00, we meet in person at one of Lisbon's many cafes, esplanadas, kiosks, associations, and writing nooks for a solid 1-hour writing session. While we have a few favourite local haunts, we tend to be nomadic in nature and hop between places to keep things interesting.
  2. We host two fortnightly Thursday writing sessions online, from 7:30-8:30 am (looking at you early writing birds!)
  3. Once a month on a Sunday we meet up for Submissions Hour, where we use the hour to submit our work to journals, competitions, magazines, or simply, hunt for literary agents and prep our query letters.
  4. We host quarterly poetry and novel writing workshops over a Sunday afternoon.
  5. Coming soon: 2-day, 2-night writing retreat in mid-March!

The point of the group:
We come from all corners of the world and backgrounds. No matter whether you are working on a poem, essay, article, dissertation, novel, short story, or script, the idea is to get together and share the space as we work on our craft. Many of us have become friends and go to each other's workshops and open mic nights to cheer each other on, but aside from socializing, the whole point of the group is to have a like-minded community of writers who want to deepen their writing- or simply to get started!
The whole motto of the group: Writing can be lonely- but it doesn't have to be.
