Makamakaole Stream (aka 13 Crossings)

Details
Hello fellow Maui Hikers
Do you enjoy walking across rocks, boulders, and roots, all while crossing a river thirteen times (more like 34 times when all is done)? Well then, join us for this adventure up the Makamakaole Stream Trail otherwise known as 13 Crossings.
We will make our way to the first waterfall by sticking to the left side of the path where the trails intersect. Then, after a short dip, we will make our way to the second waterfall. Note that while some of us may climb up the northern (2nd) fall, we will NOT be exploring above the waterfalls. Our goal is to safely negotiate our way to both waterfalls while enjoying the shade and the beauty of another of Maui's gems.
Where to Meet
This trail is off the Kahekili Hwy (HWY 340), and parking is extremely limited, making carpooling important. Plan on meeting in the parking lot of the Longs Drugs next to Whole Foods before 8:00 a.m. so we can roll out at 8 a.m. In a few vehicles. Look below for a google map to this location.
The plan will be to arrive at the trail head by 8:30.
If you choose to meet us there, the off hwy parking is just a mile or so past Waihe'e Ridge (the Waihe'e lower lot provides another optional meeting/carpool spot).
Remember not to leave ANY valuables visible as break-ins do occur.
IF you are riding in my vehicle, do not bring any extra bags etc. or they will need to be left in the bed of the truck.
What to Bring
Footwear with good traction that can get wet (because wet they will get), water (don't go drinkin' waterfalls), optional snack, and of course, an aloha spirit.
*Bug spray may come in handy.
Trail Info
This hike will take us approximately 3 miles total, It may feel further due to the rocky terrain. Do not be fooled; this is not a beginner hike. Good balance, agility, and leg strength are necessary. Knowing how to negotiate off-camber trails, slippery rocks, and loose terrain will be important to enjoying this gem. We will be shaded the entire hike, which is nice.
Note that attendance for this hike is limited due to the limited parking and often narrow single-file route of this trail. So please, if you RSVP and then cannot make it, Update your RSVP to "Not Attending" so someone else has the opportunity to fill your spot. Mahalo!
