Makena Coastal Exploration

Details
Do you enjoy long walks along Maui's rugged, less traveled, coastline? Do you enjoy stunning panoramic views? Can you handle a short steep climb and a steep descent on a gritty, dirty trail? Then this may be the event for you. Come join us as we explore the beautiful, rugged, Makena coast from Maluaka to Big Beach and everything in-between.
The short version: Malauka-->Oneuli-->Red Hill-->Little Beach-->Big Beach-->Return to Malauka. ~4 miles total.
The Long Version:
1. Walk from Malauka Beach along the rough and rugged coast to South Maui's only black-sand beach (Oneuli).
2. From there we will make the steep, slippery/loose climb up Makena's Red Hill (Pu'u Ola'i) where we will feast our eyes on stunning views of the coast as well as multi-million-dollar private residences.
3. Next, we will careful hike/slide down the back side of the Red Hill crater and discretely enter the legendary and beautiful 'Little Beach', South Maui's unofficial clothing-optional beach.
4. We will leave our clothes on as we walk along Little Beach (or trail behind the beach), head over the pass, and safely arrive at Big Beach.
Once at Big Beach, we will cool off by jumping in the water for a bit. :-)
From there we will navigate our way around the front side of the crater and make our way back to Oneuli beach.
5. From Oneuli beach we will double back across the jagged shoreline to where we started at the north side of Maluaka, with the option of cooling off with an ocean dip.
NOTE: There will likely be nudity at Little Beach, but our focus is on the natural beauty of the landscape. So, consider this a sort of disclaimer.
What to Bring:
- 1+ liters of water
- Shoes/sandals that can handle sharp, slippery volcanic rock and boulders and a steep, loose climb. There are also Kiawe thorns, so close-toed with thick soles preferred.
- Swim suit or clothes that you can wear in the ocean.
- Sun Protection
- Camera
- Optional: snack, items for post hike dip at Maluaka (optional)
Where to Meet
Let's meet at the South end of Maluaka Beach on the grass past the bathroom (somewhere in the shade). If there is no parking available on the South side, there is also parking on the North end of the beach across from the historic church (but you will need to walk across the beach to join us). Please be ready to go by 8:30 a.m.
