This discussion will be based on the following calculator, which highlights both the risk of running out of money during your life and the risk of running out of life before you've enjoyed your money:

Run your own numbers in the calculator and come discuss what your results made you think about. Here are some questions to consider, and feel free to bring your own questions for the group.

  • When you run the calculator, which outcome worries you more:
running out of money before you die, or dying with a large amount left? Why?
  • What probability of running out of money would you personally consider acceptable?
  • Do you think most people in the financial independence community are too conservative, about right, or not conservative enough with their withdrawal assumptions?
  • How do you balance optimizing for lifetime experiences versus maximizing financial security?
  • How much should we trust Monte Carlo–style simulations when planning retirement?
  • What strategies could help people feel safer spending more earlier in retirement?
  • If you discovered you were very likely to die with millions left, what would you change about your life right now?
