**Timothy Wernig Ryback** is a historian and director of the [Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Institute_for_Historical_Justice_and_Reconciliation&action=edit&redlink=1) in [The Hague](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hague). He previously served as the Deputy-Secretary General of the [Académie Diplomatique Internationale](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acad%C3%A9mie_Diplomatique_Internationale) in Paris, and Director and Vice President of the [Salzburg Global Seminar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salzburg_Global_Seminar). Prior to this, he was a lecturer in the Concentration of History and Literature at [Harvard University](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_University). Ryback has a doctorate from Harvard.[1]
Ryback has written on European history, politics and culture for numerous publications, including *[The Atlantic Monthly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Atlantic_Monthly)*, *[The New Yorker](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Yorker)*, *[The New York Times](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_York_Times)* and *[The Wall Street Journal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wall_Street_Journal)*.[1] He is also author of *Hitler's Private Library: The Books That Shaped His Life*, published in 2008, which has appeared in more than 25 editions around the world. His book, *The Last Survivor: Legacies of Dachau* was a New York Times Notable Book for 2000. Ryback is also author of *Rock Around the Bloc: A History of Rock Music in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union*, published in 1989. He has appeared in numerous television documentaries.
His 2024 book, *Takeover: Hitler's Final Rise to Power*, explores the final days of the [Weimar Republic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weimar_Republic) and its transformation into [Nazi Germany](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Germany).[2] In *[The New Yorker](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Yorker)* review, [Adam Gopnik](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Gopnik) wrote:
