LIFE IN FEW WORDS

Details

Let's get serious again. Put away all your Mardi Gras costumes and throws and spend some time in William Faulkner's south. Believe me, it's well worth it. This is not a Lenten sacrifice but a true pleasure to delve into Faulkner's prose. For our March meeting, we will read one of my favorite novels, As I Lay Dying.

As I Lay Dying, by William Faulkner (1930)
A Southern Gothic novel that follows the Bundren family's journey to fulfill the dying wish of their matriarch, Addie Bundren, to be buried in her hometown of Jefferson, Mississippi. The story is narrated through multiple perspectives, revealing the complex inner thoughts and motivations of each family member. As they travel, they face numerous hardships, including floods, fire, and personal conflicts. The novel explores themes of family, duty, and the human condition, highlighting the often absurd and tragic nature of their quest.

For planning ahead, we will continue our Historical Fiction theme in April with The Forest of Vanishing Stars, by Kristen Harmel on April 28.
