Songs of the Heart: An Introduction to Kirtan
Details
Come join us as we enter a shared experience of loving consciousness through the practice of kirtan – singing from the heart – followed by an opportunity to socialize and connect.
If you’re new to chanting, come try it out with seasoned practitioners who will be there to lovingly show you the ropes. If you know kirtan, come share your love of this beautiful approach.
There is no need to be a "good" singer! All you need is receptiveness, a smile, and your beautiful presence. This is about the collective energy of a group of people expressing their authentic voice to music, while radiating love and compassion to all beings.
What to Expect
We will be singing songs and repeating mantras, which are phrases of love and light. The practice is one of active meditation, concentrating on the music, sound, and vibrations.
Justine-Anjali (voice and harmonium) and Andrew (voice and guitar) – members of the OMBuds – will guide us through this practice. The songs are simple and easy to follow, and song books will be provided. Think of it as a consciousness-oriented group sing-along! With the intention of mind-body-spirit integration.
We will also enjoy pauses of stillness and meditation. Justine will provide short teachings (also called satsang, spiritual instruction) to help you connect with the deeper purpose and potential of chanting.
What are the benefits of chanting?
- Fun!
- The meditative aspects of chanting can enhance present moment awareness and connection with the true self that, for those who are spiritually inclined, can lead to personal encounters with the divine. It is a heart opener.
- Chanting affects the mind, body, and emotions, which can lead to – or help integrate – altered states of consciousness. Research demonstrates this effect is driven by the repetition and rhythm, breath control, vocal vibration, focus and attention, and the release of neurotransmitters like oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine.
- Nervous system regulation can be a result of chanting. As described in polyvagal theory, chanting increases vagal tone, which is associated with nervous system resilience and stress reduction. Chanting in a group stimulates co-regulation, leading to a sense of well-being, relaxation and joy.

About OMBuds
OMBuds is a close-knit group of friends who aim to spread love and consciousness through music and yoga. They draw inspiration from the Dharma Yoga Kirtan Band, which is established in New York City, and serve in the same vein on this side of the border….and beyond. Their members are all at once yogis, musicians, artists, visionaries, and seekers, who want to share the profound benefits of Bhakti Yoga, through the practice of kirtan by signing traditional chants, contemporary songs, and even their own original works. Justine has practiced and taught yoga since 2005, and the OMbuds held their first kirtan in 2016. You can learn more about OMBuds on their website or facebook page.
We are proudly hosting this event at the Origin Arts & Community Centre, which aims to provide an accessible mulitpurpose facility that fosters authentic creative expression.
