The Mismeasure of Man is a history and critique of the methods and motivation behind the scientific studies that support biological determinism ... the idea that the social differences among different classes, races, and sexes are the result of different inherited, genetic intelligences.

Gould calls into question the definition of such a broad notion as intelligence and the means scientists use to "rank" intelligence.
