ABOUT SC OPEN HOUSE
The Sunshine Coast Open House is an annual event that celebrates the architectural and historical heritage of our region.
It provides free public access to some of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast's most iconic, significant, and interesting buildings, offering visitors a chance to explore and learn about the area's unique built environment.
The event aims to promote conversation around urban planning, design, and the future of sustainable living on the Sunshine Coast.

ABOUT NOOSA’S ARCHITECTURAL LANDSCAPE
Noosa’s residential architecture tells a story of both coastal and hinterland influences, blending environmental consciousness with local heritage.
Along the coast, early beach shacks gave way to modernist homes in the 1970s and 80s, designed for indoor-outdoor living and incorporating large windows, open spaces, and a connection to the landscape.
Pioneers like Gabriel Poole championed minimalist, climate-responsive designs, using natural materials and passive cooling methods.
In contrast, the hinterland’s historical town centres like Cooroy, Pomona, and Eumundi featured traditional Queenslanders—elevated timber homes with wide verandahs built for the subtropical climate conditions.
These rural homes emphasized practicality, using locally sourced materials to blend with the natural surroundings.
Today, Noosa’s architecture - both coastal and rural - embraces sustainability, integrating solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and eco-friendly designs, materials and construction methods which maintain a strong connection to the natural environment.
This balance between coastal luxury and hinterland charm has shaped Noosa as a trailblazer in sustainable and harmonious residential design.
