Nordic Letter Connections at the National Postal Museum

Details

Come join Nordic Language Meetup at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum on Sunday, 16 February from 1-3pm. We will learn a little about different types of letters and postal systems associated with the Nordic countries. We’ll discuss Swedish feather letters, the Danish gækkebrev, the Icelandic love letter ceremony, imagery used in early Norwegian stamps, and Ystävänpäivä cards in Finland. Then we will practice our Nordic languages by writing short letters and reading them aloud.

After our language practice, we’ll offer an optional informal “tour” where we will point out Nordic postboxes, Nordic stamps, Scandinavian-American newspapers, and letters between Scandinavia and the US that are on display in the museum. Meet us in the Byrne Education Loft- look for tabletop Nordic flags. Museum admission is free and this is a free event. The Union Station Metro Station is across the street and there is paid parking in the Union Station garage.
