About us
North Canterbury Asatru Meetup
The North Canterbury Asatru Meetup welcomes everyone. We are dedicated to understanding the lore (Eddas, Sagas and stories), the rúnar (runes), galdr (incantations) as well as the honour the Goðin (The Gods). And, you will pick up some Old Norse along the way!
Viktor Rydberg (1828-1895) was a pioneer in Teutonic myth. He wrote the three-part series titled Teutonic Mythology. From his work and the works of those before him, such as the Grimm brothers, he pieced together an epic narrative from all the disparate stories found in Northern Europe which spans the origin of the universe to Ragnarok.
We will study this epic and learn about the Æsir (Goðin, “The Gods”), Vanir (nature Gods), Álfar (elves), Dvergar (dwarves) and Jötnar (“giants”). Furthermore, we will learn how the Goðin created the Teutonic people, passed on their knowledge and joined with the Teutonic heros in ancient battles.
We will explore the mysteries of the rúnar. We will learn the names of the rúnar, cast the rúnar and understand how to predict the future and how to use rún magic.
Finally, we will host three family friendly Veizlas (festivals) per year. Each Veizla has three Blótar (offerings) with it. The Veizlas allow us to come together as a community and to honour the Goðin.
The North Canterbury Asatru Meetup is a strong vibrant community of learners. Effort and participation are essential to build a solid understanding of what had been lost.
This meetup is associated with the North Canterbury Viking Martial Arts Meetup whose focus is on Viking related HEMA (historical European martial arts).
