I will plan a monthly urban hike, hopefully, in some beautiful areas of the cities. Plan on 6-8 miles with some hills possible, maybe some traffic or bicycles to contend with so dogs must be on a short leash (no retractable leashes).
Gardens should be starting to bloom and weather shouldn't be too cold.
This month let's start in Laurelhurst and work our way around the water and down to the Union Bay Natural Area.
5-6 miles and about 260ft elevation gain, depending on the exact route we take.
Laurelhurst in a Nut Shell
Laurelhurst is a Seattle neighborhood located on the shores of Lake Washington and Union Bay. The Laurelhurst neighborhood was largely developed in the 1920’s and abounds in waterfront homes with delightful architecture. Surrounded by the waters of Lake Washington, many Laurelhurst homes command impressive views of Lake Washington and The Cascade Mountain Range.
The Union Bay Natural Area is a public wildlife area, natural restoration laboratory, and an important habitat next to Lake Washington. At 74 acres, with 4 miles of shoreline, it is the second largest natural system left on the lake. Considered one of the best bird-watching sites in the city of Seattle, over 200 species of birds have been sighted here. Some long-time residents call this area the Montlake Fill
