Contra dancing is an easy-to-learn style of social dance accompanied by a live band. Do you like smiling, laughing and interacting with friendly folks? Getting some healthy exercise while having fun? Contra dancing might be for you. Knowing how to dance is not necessary because a caller prompts the moves and guides the dancers. A short workshop is given at the start, teaching basic terminology and dance moves.
Come alone or with friends. It's customary to dance with a variety of partners throughout an evening. Typically at a dance there are 40 to 80 people of varied experience levels, ages and backgrounds.
Much of the music is drawn from Appalachian, Celtic, and old-timey traditions, with pop, jazz, Eastern European and electric for good measure. From lively and playful to smooth and elegant, the music always has a great beat enhanced by the collective energy of joyful dancers.
Swingin' Tern is known both as a beginner-friendly dance group and the host of special events that draw dancers from several states.

DATES: First and third Saturday of every month.
LESSON: 7:00-7:30 PM, DANCE: 7:30– 10:30 PM
COST: $15 adult, $5 student (certain special dances may be higher)

A few times a year we hold dances that are not to be missed, and tonight is one of those nights! Welcome notes for new dancers: The beginner's lesson at 7:00 PM will get you dancing in no time. Come alone or with a friend. Throughout the evening, we mix around and dance with everyone. The music is live, and the steps are called/prompted. People of all ages attend, and our events are alcohol-free. The hall is air conditioned. Dancing is aerobic; dress lightly and bring a water bottle. Flat-soled shoes are best; heels or flip-flops are not recommended.
Tonight's talent: WILL MENTOR is a caller from Northern Vermont known for his clear teaching, upbeat wit, and relaxed stage presence. He loves to choreograph evenings with a variety of dances and tempos that at times surprise and always delight, all the while keeping intact his guiding principle as a caller: “It’s about the dancers!”
GOOD COMPANY features Helen Kuhar on guitar and vocals, Cecily Mills on cello and vocals, and Rohan Weeden on fiddle. This New England-based trio draws from Irish, Scottish, New England, and Quebecois folk traditions, as well as original material. Good Company brings playfulness and dance-ability to contra dances near and far!
Admission: $15-$20 as you're able. $5 with student ID. Cash at the door.

Tonight's talent: DAVE RUPP has been an active dancer and caller in the Philadelphia region since the 90’s, calling regularly at the Mt Airy Thursday Night Contra, and at dances in Princeton and Arden, DE. He has also called at the Valley Contra in Bethlehem, and at dances in Baltimore and Glen Echo, MD. Dave enjoys calling a varied program of dances with good humor and an energetic style.
GAN AINM brings the Irish tunes with Sean Rosenberry's energetic fiddle and Steven Czajkowski's driving rhythm guitar. Their playful and improvisatory style is bound to keep you on your toes, and on the dance floor!

Tonight's talent: CARTER NORTH has been dancing throughout the country since 2014, and started calling to deepen his understanding of contra dance as a form. He participated in Brooklyn Contra’s Caller Development workshop series in 2023 and apprenticed through a grant from NYSCA. He brings his love of social dance to the mic, with focus on creating a joyful experience for dancers of all experience levels.
CONTRA INTUITIVE features Ryck and Peggy Kaiser who combine their musical talents to provide lively dance music for contra dances, square dances, and civil war reenactment balls. Ryck has been fiddling for dances for over thirty years. His sound is southern Appalachian with a raggy, swinging feel. Expect to hear reels, rags, marches and a few jigs. In addition to the piano, Peggy plays the Appalachian mountain dulcimer.
