Chips and Salsa became a popular snack in the United States around the 1940s, when Rebecca Webb Caranza began commercially producing tortilla chips from leftover tortillas in Los Angeles. She fried misshapen tortillas into triangles, and they gained popularity as a snack, particularly when combined with the salsa that was already a staple of Mexican and Southwestern cuisine.
