Update 2: Location update - Trammel Crow. See bottom of posting

Welcome new members and new hobbyists! I have been contacted in regards to new user flight training and information. This group offers a wealth of knowledge and experience so I am extending our collective skills to help those new to the hobby.

We will be hosting a New hobbyist flight training and familiarization meetup. This will be open to members of all experience levels but is mostly for the benefit of our new members and pilots. I am looking for some volunteers to come out and not only help build solid foundations for new hobbyists but also meet the new members, introduce yourselves and welcome them to the world of drones and UAV's that we are all so passionate about!

New members, pilots, and owners...This is for you. Please come out and get flight training, hardware assistance, questions answered and a host of new member support. Bring whatever you have to fly or want to learn. The people in this meetup are an awesome group of hobbyists and professionals. Feel confident you are getting solid information and top notch instruction. After all, these are the same people that just recently set a Guinness World Record!!! You're not just going to receive training...but training by NTDUG World Record Setting Pilots. Where else can you get that?

I need several members to come out and support this event as both instructors and safety officers.

Due to some details still being worked out, we will hold this event at Trammel Crow Park. See address in the event listing. It is the location most central to downtown Dallas. On our last visit, the downtown skyline was a bit hazy for those wanting to get good footage. Should be clear this weekend. This is Class B airspace, so we will be operating with a 100' AGL ceiling which should not be a concern for those attending as students. Tower will receive 48-hour notice and I have contacted Love Field ATC liaison. Hopefully, we have the parking issue resolved. I am told it is policy not to unlock a parking area until it has been cleaned, and the area we intended to park in had not been serviced. They are assigning a crew to clean it on Friday. Let's cross our fingers.

I would ask the instructors to arrive about 15 minutes early to setup and receive a short pre-flight briefing.

New Pilot Checklist

  1. Make sure to charge batteries, screen, and Controller the night before the meetup. If using a phone as your screen, consider a portable recharger. Batteries can go fast.

  2. Pack an extra set of props if available (just in case). Check existing props for nicks, cracks, and damage

  3. Don't forget to put your SD Card in the drone. Make sure there is free space on the card and that it is not full.

  4. Pack an extra data cable in case one goes bad. Check existing cable for tears or other visible damage. Be aware that some USB cables will only charge a device and not transmit data. You should have a cable that transmits data.

  5. If you use a DJI product, you can get in some "safe" practice before the meetup. There is a simulator built into your drone. It is located in the DJI app under the training menu. Make sure to remove the props from your drone before using the simulator as your drone will mimic what you do on screen (i.e. spin up motors).

  6. If a sun hood is available to you it would be a good idea to bring one.

  7. There are a few different versions of the DJI Go app. Make sure you have the correct one loaded for your aircraft. Have a look through the interface and settings to familiarize yourself. Make sure to create your DJI account before you arrive at the meetup. You will need internet access to do this.

  8. Bring your questions. There are no stupid questions...just a sudden change in vocabulary when your new drone flys away, causes an accident or becomes expensive plastic rubble. We are all learning...Welcome to the club!

  9. The BIGGIE...Make sure your firmware is up to date if you are flying a DJI drone. Occasionally this can stop the aircraft from flying at all. If you don't know how to do this, here is a link to some youtube videos covering various models - Click Here (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=update+dki+firmware)
