Power BI, Synapse and Government API data with Russ Loski

Abstract:
The United States government makes a lot of interesting data available. Much of it is available using APIs. This session will look at how to consume API data using two of Microsoft's data analysis tools: Power BI and Azure Synapse Analytics.

In this session I will demonstrate how to load API data into Power BI using Power Query. I will demonstrate how the Power Query editor in Power BI Desktop handles a lot of the heavy lifting.

I will demonstrate how to connect to an API in Azure Synapse Analytics using a PySpark notebook. I will demonstrate how to store authentication keys securely in Azure Key Vault.

I will look at APIs that require authentication keys and those that don't.

As a side benefit, you will learn where you can find some of good example data, either to enrich your analytics or simply to provide samples for trying things out.
