Joffre Lake Trail: Intermediate

About the event

The Joffre Lakes Trail is one of BC’s most popular hikes, known for its three stunning glacier-fed lakes—Lower, Middle, and Upper—each more breathtaking than the last. The trail is well-marked with a steady, gradual climb, plus one steeper section near the second lake.

It’s an easy five-minute walk to the first lake, making it family-friendly, while the stretch to the second is longer but manageable. From there, it’s only a short 10–15 minute hike to the Upper Lake with incredible glacier views.

Facilities are minimal: outhouses are at the trailhead and campground, water must be filtered, and camping is first-come, first-served. Rangers often check permits, and mosquitoes can be plentiful—bring bug spray. Snow is common outside of summer, so poles (and sometimes spikes) are helpful.

Recommended Hiking Clothing Footwear and Gear:

• Comfortable shoes:
  Hiking Boots or Hiking shoes
• Moisture-wicking layers: Choose clothing that keeps you dry and comfortable, such as merino wool or synthetic fabrics.
• Base layer: A lightweight, breathable base layer for colder weather.
• Waterproof jacket: A waterproof and breathable outer layer for rainy days.
• Hat and gloves: For colder weather, choose hats and gloves that are warm and breathable.
• Backpack or bag: A comfortable bag to carry essentials like water, snacks, and extra layers.
