The Fairfield Horseshoe is a classic circular walk in the Eastern Fells, taking in eight summits including Fairfield at 873m. From the top you can see most of the Lake District laid out around you. On a clear April morning it's hard to beat.
The route starts and finishes in Ambleside. 17km, 950m of climbing, 6 to 7 hours moving. Challenging but nothing technical — sustained climbing on clear paths, no scrambling required.
The logistics
Meet at Rydal Road Car Park, Ambleside, LA22 9AZ at 8:30am. Pay and display, around £8 for the day. Arrive early — the car park fills fast on good-weather Saturdays.
