Shingle gully is unique and very interesting geological area which involves bushwhacking and scrambling.

Explore the Shingle Gully Ice Caves, where ice persists into summer in deep crevice caves. These caves are in a backcountry area in Minnewaska State Park Preserve. This rugged, protected landscape is accessible only on guided tours led by park staff and volunteer docents. This all-day, strenuous adventure ascends and descends 1,500 feet, includes off-trail bushwhacking and steep rock scrambles, and is only appropriate for experienced hikers.

Approximate Address: 20 Berme Road Ellenville, NY 12428 ( firehouse)

Directons to trailhead/Ellenville (from the south): (1) NY Thruway (I-87) north → Exit 16 (Harriman); after toll, onto Rte 17 West. (2) On Rte 17 West, proceed 30 miles to Exit 113 / Rte 209(3) Take Rte 209 North (right) for 13 miles to Ellenville(4) In Ellenville, right at 2nd traffic light onto Canal Street(5) Proceed 1/2 mile to Berme Road Park - make left(6) Go about 100 yards and make a right turn just before the red and white building (The Mack Hose Co) and drive up to the Picnic parking Lot

TIME: 8:30 AM PLEASE BE PROMPT, WE HAVE LIMITED TIME FOR VISTING THIS AREA OF THE SAM’S POINT DUE TO PARK REGULATIONS

PLEASE BRING:

At least 2 liters of water
Headlamp, helmet suggested
Gloves for scrambling
Long pants
Warm layers of clothing/ jacket/ winter hat
