Intro Meeting

I would like to get input from new members about what types of events you are interested in. After getting input, I'll schedule a handful of events for this winter. I will also talk a little about my vision for this group.

Here’s a plan for our meetup. I’m looking forward to kicking this off!

• Intro questions going “around the room”:

1. Your name
2. On a scale of 0-10, how much experience/confidence do you have with wilderness survival? (0 is “It would be risky for me to do a 2-mile hike alone” and 10 is “I could survive anywhere with just a knife”)
3. What are the “survival scenarios” you are personally most likely to face? (Do you enjoy hiking? Kayaking? surfing?...)

• At this point I’ll then talk about my background, personal experience, how I envision the group meetings going.
• Then I’ll open and facilitate discussion…
4. What topics do you want to spend time on in future meetups? Some immediate ideas include:
a. Survival overview (fire, food, first aid, shelter, signaling, water, positive mental attitude; relative importance of each…)
b. Fire skills (general, using ferro rods, primitive methods like bow drill, fire plow, etc.)
c. Shelter building (knots, shelter types with/without a poncho, etc.)
d. First Aid
e. Water procurement/ purification
f. Survival kit items (tailoring for different sizes, locations, etc.)
g. Gear Selection (clothing, knives, signaling gear, apps, etc.)
h. Others?
5. Administration:
a. Any other questions you have about this meetup?
b. What side of town are you on? Most of our in-person meetings will be at Tillie Fowler Park.
c. Would you like the virtual format for “classroom time” before practicing skills in person?
d. Are you OK with attending in-person meetups in an outdoor venue, socially distanced? I will limit attendees as needed to ensure safe distancing.
e. Do you own some basic “survival gear” (i.e. a knife, some paracord, a poncho…?)
