Volunteering Opportunity: A Special Valentine's Day Meal for Families in Need

Since 1999, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering at an incredible facility that provides support for families whose children are receiving long-term care at the Children’s Hospital. Up to 51 families stay here, and while their children are undergoing treatment, they often find themselves relying on hospital cafeterias or fast food for their meals, spending long hours by their child’s bedside.

This Valentine’s Day, I want to offer these families something truly special—a home-cooked, hot meal and a little extra love to help them through a challenging time. Sometimes, a simple, nourishing meal can be the comfort they need to power through the next day.

Here’s how we can make it happen:

We will prepare and serve a warm meal to the families staying at the facility. I’m looking for 10 dedicated volunteers who are fully committed to showing up and fulfilling their responsibilities. If you are not able to make this a priority, please do not sign up. It’s critical that everyone who volunteers is dependable—no cancellations or no-shows, as we want to maintain a strong, ongoing relationship with this wonderful organization.

If you’ve canceled in the past or have a pattern of cancellations, I will have to remove you from the list. We need a team that is ready to work together, share the load, and make this event as meaningful as possible.

What we’ll do:

• Plan the menu together
• I’ll handle the shopping and bring the ingredients
• We’ll cook and serve the meal with care
• Add a special touch with flowers and decorations to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere

In past years, each volunteer has contributed around $30, but with the added cost of flowers and decorations, this year’s event will be a bit more expensive. I appreciate everyone’s generosity in making this day memorable for the families.
